The Roman prince Romulus (played by Thomas Sangster) has his father, Orestes (played by Iain Glen), killed by rebels, while Romulus is held captive by enemies on the island of Capri. Before his death, Orestes entrusts his affairs to General Aurelius (played by Colin Firth), urging him to rescue his son and restore the throne of the Roman Empire to its rightful lineage. Loyal to the emperor, Aurelius teams up with Ethiopian Batatius (played by Nonso Anozie) and Ambrosinus (played by Ben Kingsley) to form a daring expedition. Later, the valiant female warrior Maria (played by Aishwarya Rai) also joins the group as they set off for Capri Island. On Capri Island, Romulus and his mentor are also searching for a glimmer of hope for survival.
