The series, based on the third season of the same name Wondery podcast, focuses on Italian thoracic surgeon and former regenerative medicine researcher Paul Machiarini, known for his research on fraud and manipulation.
Machiarini, considered a pioneer in the use of implanted patients' own stem cells as biological and synthetic scaffolds for tracheal grafts, was accused of immoralizingly performing experimental surgery, resulting in the death of seven of the eight patients undergoing his synthetic tracheal transplant.
