In 1966, a ship floating in the North Sea of the Atlantic was the headquarters of a rock radio station loved by British audiences. Carl (played by Tom Sturridge), who dropped out of school due to drug use, is sent here by his mother Charlotte (played by Emma Thompson), where he meets music lovers and free spirits like Quentin (played by Bill Nighy), The Count (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), and Dave (played by Nick Frost). On the other hand, government official Sir Alistair Dormandy (played by Kenneth Branagh) decides to find a way to shut down the illegal radio station. As the government pressures the station's sponsors, the radio station's revenue continues to decline. At this point, Gavin (played by Rhys Ifans), who has been abroad for two years and has gained international acclaim, decides to return home, solving the radio's problems. However, with Gavin's return, new issues arise within the station...
