The play is based on the true crime of a pair of brothers who killed their biological parents, Hosea Menendez and Katie Menendez, in 1996. Prosecutors accused them of coveting their family's wealth, but the brothers claimed that they had committed heinous crimes out of fear that they had been physically and sexually abused by their parents, and that they were still serving life sentences without the possibility of parole, and that they are still holding on to their original testimony to this day.
