This film is based on true events, with Nicolas Cage playing Colonel Charles Butler McVay. The ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine's torpedo in the South Pacific in July 1945, carrying two atomic bombs. Of the 1,196 officers and crew aboard, about 300 went down with the ship, while the rest faced sun exposure, dehydration, saltwater immersion, and shark attacks while waiting for rescue. Only 317 were saved, and McVay was brought before a military court, only to be exonerated half a century later.
