The rise of Catherine II Alexeyevna, the only empress in Russian history to be titled 'the Great', is recounted, along with her relationship with her husband Peter III Fyodorovich. Catherine was introduced to Peter when she was 10 years old, as European royals used marriage as a tool to control political connections between countries. Although she admitted to initially finding him annoying, they married when she turned 16. Their married life was tumultuous, with rumors of infidelity on both sides, and Peter's temper became unbearable. Just six months after ascended to the Russian throne, Catherine organized a coup against him, leading to her successful 34-year reign, while Peter was assassinated.
