In the crime-ridden Gotham City, there is a name that sends shivers down the spines of criminals: Batman. Batman (played by Michael Keaton) moves through the darkest corners, fighting crime everywhere. During one of his crime-fighting operations, Batman causes the thug Jack Napier (played by Jack Nicholson) to fall into a chemical vat. As a result, Napier suffers nerve damage to his face, becoming the eternally grinning Joker. The Joker kills the leader of a gang and takes control of the entire Gotham City's underworld. He uses chemical agents to make people laugh to death, and he attacks a museum with this method, but is thwarted by Batman who arrives just in time to foil the Joker's plot. At his girlfriend Vicki Vale's (played by Kim Basinger) home, the Joker suddenly attacks, but Batman cleverly evades the assault and accidentally discovers that the Joker is the very enemy who killed his parents. This time, the Joker kidnaps Batman's girlfriend Vicki and challenges Batman to a final showdown on the rooftop of a church!
