The story tells about a young master from a wealthy family studying in the provincial capital during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. He rushes home to attend his brother-in-law's funeral after the latter suddenly dies. On his way home at night, he saves a girl in the woods, and later discovers that she is beautiful, so he brings her back to his home to serve his parents as a maid. The girl is named Li Niang, and over time, the young master falls in love with her, leading to their grand wedding...
