There are countless magicians in the world, but most of them are fraudsters who flaunt their tricks. Stanley (played by Colin Firth) is among those with real skills. Though he is British, he excels at performing Oriental magic. While on tour, Stanley also pursues a career in debunking false magicians, driving out the bad apples from the industry. One day, Stanley encounters a girl named Sophie (played by Emma Stone) in France, who claims to be a medium able to communicate with the dead. Skeptical, Stanley immediately assumes Sophie is lying, and she becomes his next 'prey'. However, as time goes by, the quirky Sophie gradually shakes Stanley's resolve, and he finds himself enchanted by this mysterious girl.
