After her mother died, Kate (played by Helena Bonham Carter) was taken in by her aunt Madeline (played by Charlotte Rampling). Madeline hoped that Kate would marry a wealthy man and live a life free of worries, but the unruly Kate fell in love with an obscure journalist named Morton (played by Linus Roache). Soon after, a rich girl named Millie (played by Alison Elliott) appeared in Kate's life; she was seriously ill and had little time left. The innocent Millie fell in love with Morton, and Kate watched everything unfold. A plan emerged in which she could inherit Millie's fortune and win Morton's love. She quickly became close friends with Millie. However, people's hearts were not as easily manipulated as Kate imagined, and as Morton's feelings for Millie deepened, Kate found herself sinking into deep anxiety.
