Ex-soldier Li Changjiang (played by Andy Lau) is imprisoned after being implicated by two of his gang member comrades. After enduring severe beatings from police officer Mao Xiangyang (played by Xu Jinjian), he is sentenced to death. On the day of his execution, Changjiang manages to escape with a saw blade given to him by his father. Changjiang finds a human smuggling group to sneak into Hong Kong, where he meets Ji Xin (played by Mo Shaocong) and Aman (played by Li Meifeng). Aman's kindness deeply touches Changjiang. After his relatives in Hong Kong refuse to take him in, he can only work on a construction site to pay off his debts to the smuggling group leader, Brother Liang. During this time, he hears that Aman has been sold into prostitution and spends day and night thinking of ways to rescue her. Changjiang fights against a pimp gang but is at a disadvantage, so he ends up helping Hunan gang leader Sha Pizhuo rob a jewelry store to enlist the help of the gang in rescuing Aman. Ji Xin, who is also working under Sha Pizhuo, nearly gets caught during the robbery, but after Changjiang saves him, the two become close friends. After helping Sha Pizhuo with the robbery, Changjiang finds that the other party fails to keep their promise and instead uses Aman to coerce him into committing more crimes, while Mao Xiangyang comes to Hong Kong specifically to capture Changjiang.
