"Big year" is a competition for bird watching enthusiasts. Participants need to spend a whole year and energy to record the number of bird species they observe, and the one with the largest number will win.Brad, Stu and Kenny are three hardcore birdwatchers.Brad (Jack Black) is an old otaku who has accomplished nothing, so when he decides to spend a lot of money to attend the "Big New Year", his parents think he is crazy; Steve Martin (Steve Martin) is the president of a large company, so when he decides to put down his millions of business and run to attend the "Big New Year", his assistant thinks he is crazy.The old and the young met in the competition, quickly became friends, and decided to jointly deal with their strongest opponent, Kenny (Owen Wilson), the winner of the last "Big Year".Only bird friends understand what it means to give up a whole year of career and life. The three "bird friends" compete hard during the big year, and ultimately they have to face problems in life... The film is adapted from the 1998 novel of the same name by Mark Obmascik.
