Keiko Inagawa visited Dr. Aizawa, a psychiatrist, at her father's introduction because her fiancé, Kisou Tamura, was feeling somewhat neurotic. Kisou had been adopted into the Tamura family as a child and was the youngest of four siblings. Three of his brothers had disappeared for no apparent reason. The eldest brother, Junichi, who ran a pharmacy in Kumamoto, went missing two years ago, and in the past two months, his middle brother, Kazuou, a nuclear researcher in Tokai Village, and the third brother, Shohei, who ran an ice manufacturing business in Numazu, also vanished one after another. Kisou was worried that he would be next. Aizawa was intrigued by Keiko's story and agreed to meet Kisou.
