Shunichi and Haruko, a married couple running a café, closed it down and traveled to Hokkaido on a motorcycle. As they rested by the river, a young couple, Ei and Yoko, passed by, secretly driving away from their parents. Shunichi forgot that Haruko had made coffee and ended up preparing and drinking his own, which upset her. He left her behind, still angry, and set off alone. After a while, he discovered Yoko lying on the road and picked her up, continuing to ride. Yoko claimed she had been abandoned by Ei. Meanwhile, Haruko was picked up by Ei and they went to a drive-in for a meal. Shunichi and Yoko then appeared, creating a strange combination that resulted in a heavy silence between the two pairs. That night, Shunichi and Yoko piled into their tent, while Haruko and Ei also formed a relationship at a hotel, but Haruko felt drained by Ei's youthful excitement. The next day, the two pairs continued their journeys, harboring hatred for each other.
