The renowned work "Toge" by Sima Liaotai has been adapted for the screen for the first time, directed by the famous director Koizumi Yasushi, featuring a star-studded cast including Hiroshi Yakusho, Tatsuya Nakadai, and Ryu Takemoto. "Toge" tells the legendary life story of a key figure from the late Edo period---Kawai Tsugunosuke, the elder statesman of the Echigo Nagaoka domain, played by Hiroshi Yakusho, with Matsuyama Takako portraying his wife. The film also features actors such as Tanaka Min, Kyoko Kagawa, Kouzaburo Sasaki, Ryuuta Bandou, Ayato Nagayama, Takaaki Enoki, Daisuke Watanabe, Kenichi Yayama, Manabu Yamamoto, Hisashi Igawa, Masahiro Higashide, and Hidetaka Yoshioka. Filming will begin in September in Niigata Nagaoka, with the most important scene, the "Kitaet War," involving 5,000 extras. The film is set to be released in 2020.
