College student Lucy takes her boyfriend back to the Bushwick area of New York to visit her grandmother during the holidays, but they get caught in a riot, and her boyfriend tragically dies in an explosion. In a panic, Lucy hides in a basement but is discovered by two armed teenage boys searching for survivors. At this critical moment, Stubb, who lives in the basement, saves Lucy and informs her that several other major cities in the U.S. have also been attacked. However, Lucy insists on finding her grandmother and convinces Stubb to accompany her. When they reach her grandmother's house, they find out that she has already passed away. The two of them then evade gunfire and manage to find Lucy's cousin Belinda, capturing a soldier in the process. The captured soldier reveals that they targeted Bushwick for the attack because the coalition forces believe the area is racially diverse and disunited, making it an easier target. The three realize this is a civil unrest. On their way to the government army's safe zone, they are kidnapped by the local gang leader, James, and his followers. James leaves Belinda as a hostage, demanding that Lucy and Stubb go to a cathedral a few blocks away to find help. Lucy and Stubb arrive at the cathedral and find a priest, but they are attacked again. They hide in a laundromat, where Stubb is accidentally shot by a terrified civilian girl. Lucy and Belinda desperately run toward the government army's location, but Belinda steps on a landmine and injures her leg. In the process of helping Belinda, Lucy is fatally shot.
