The new Musashi, played by Toshiro Mifune, and his friend Honnami Taneya, played by Rentaro Mikuni, participated in the Battle of Sekigahara to make a name for themselves, but Musashi's side suffered a tragic defeat. While fleeing, the two got lost and were fortunately rescued by a mother-daughter pair, A-Jia, portrayed by Mitsuko Mito, and Shu-Shi, played by Mariko Okada. Musashi rejected Shu-Shi's love, returning alone to his hometown of Mimasaka, while Taneya abandoned his lover A-Tong, played by Kaoru Yachigusa, to be with A-Jia. Musashi, who was pursued by soldiers after breaking through a checkpoint, became the target of public anger when Taneya's mother was enraged at being unable to see her son. In a critical moment, the monk Za-An, played by Kurou Uegaki, saved Musashi by hanging him in a tree to test his will.
