In Shanghai in 1941, four years had passed since the beginning of the Chinese Resistance against Japan. With the outbreak of the Pacific War, the British and Americans joined the fight, and life for Westerners in the Shanghai International Settlement underwent tremendous upheaval. Eleven-year-old Jamie was among them. While fleeing, Jamie got separated from his parents and encountered Americans Beich and Frank, who nearly sold him. The three of them made their way to the Zhabei concentration camp. In the camp, Jamie came to understand the brutality of war and learned the survival philosophy of 'doing anything for food.' He also met a Japanese boy who shared his interest in airplanes. However, deep down, he always longed for the day he could reunite with his parents.
