Lin Jiali (played by Tsang Ai-jia) grew up in a traditional family of doctors in a small town in southern Taiwan. She and her brother Lin Jiasen (played by Gao Minghong) received an elite education from a young age and graduated from prestigious universities. However, unlike her brother, Jiali was unwilling to be forced to give up her lover Tan Weiqing (played by Hu Yinmeng) and accept a marriage imposed by her father. She resolutely left home and moved north to marry her lover Cheng Dewei (played by Mao Xuewei) and settle in the rapidly modernizing city of Taipei. However, during Taiwan's economic boom in the 70s and 80s, the competition in business became fierce, and Dewei gradually got caught up in a world of money-driven pursuits and indulgence, ultimately losing himself. Increasingly feeling lonely and empty, Jiali received a phone call one day informing her that Dewei had drowned at the beach. She rushed to the seaside, facing a body that she was unsure was her husband. Years later, Jiali re-encounters Tan Weiqing, who has returned from abroad, and they reminisce about the past in a café.
