Ted (played by Josh Radnor), Marshall (played by Jason Segel), and Barney (played by Neil Patrick Harris) are three friends, among whom only Marshall has a stable relationship— he is soon to marry kindergarten teacher Lily (played by Alyson Hannigan). Barney, on the other hand, is a typical playboy, and settling down is impossible for him. Ted wishes to find love and enter a normal married life, and he finally meets his dream girl—beautiful news anchor Robin (played by Cobie Smulders) at a bar. However, in their first date, Ted rushes to confess his feelings, which scares Robin off. To help Ted with his romantic troubles, his friends scramble to give him advice, and Robin slowly becomes part of their friend group... The show's most distinctive feature is that it is narrated from the perspective of Ted's future children, raising the question of who exactly is their mother, which remains the biggest mystery of the series.
