The film tells the story of a love affair caught between death and racial discrimination, set in a small town in the deep South of the United States, where racial prejudice runs deep. The white male protagonist, Hank (played by Billy Bob Thornton), has a complicated relationship with black woman Lacie (played by Halle Berry). Hank grew up in a conservative white family steeped in extreme racism, heavily influenced by his father. After his father retires, Hank takes on the role of executing death sentences. After just having executed a black death row inmate, Hank unexpectedly encounters his wife Lacie. Soon, the two fall in love. However, in an environment where racial views are conservative and rigid, will their incredible fateful crossing be a beautiful dance of entanglement, or a difficult struggle?
