During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a rampant plague in the capital city one year, causing great harm to both military and civilian populations. The emperor specifically appointed General Hong to go to Longhu Mountain in Xinzhu, Jiangxi, to summon Master Zhang to exorcise evil spirits and eliminate the plague. General Hong could not find the master, but out of stubbornness, he went to the Upper Qing Palace to suppress the hundred and eight demons there.
