During Japan's Northern and Southern Dynasties, wars were rampant, and people were displaced. A mother-in-law and daughter-in-law lived in a grassy plain, hunting down straggling soldiers and stripping their armor for food. One evening, a young soldier named Hachi (played by Sato Kei) returned from the battlefield and informed the mother-in-law (played by Nobuko Otowa) that her son had died, and he stayed to live with them. Hachi constantly teased the daughter-in-law (played by Mitsuko Yoshimura), and one night, she recklessly ran to Hachi's dwelling, and the two became intertwined... The mother-in-law feared her daughter-in-law would leave her. In her desperation, she encountered a samurai (played by Shigeji Uno) wearing a demon mask, who claimed to possess a beautiful face. The mother-in-law killed the samurai and wore the mask in the grass to scare away her daughter-in-law, but ultimately failed. However, the more terrifying truth was that the mask she wore was cursed... This film won the Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actress.
