In 1978, war tore Italy apart into two: the Italian Communist Party (DCI) formed a landmark alliance with the country's traditional conservative party—the Christian Democracy Party (DC)—which also marked the impending emergence of the first government supported by communists in the history of Western nations. Aldo Moro, the chairman of the DC party, was the primary supporter of this agreement. On March 16, 1978, the very day the new government held its inauguration ceremony, Aldo Moro was kidnapped in an ambush. He was held hostage for 55 days, encompassing 55 days of hope, fear, negotiations, failures, goodwill, and evil deeds. After 55 days, halfway between the DC headquarters in Rome and the PCI headquarters, his body was discovered in the trunk of a car.
