Harry (played by Richard Widmark) is a humble pimp, but he has never been satisfied with the status quo and constantly seeks ways to get rich. In a chance encounter, Harry meets a wrestler named George (played by Stanislaus Zbyszko), and the two hit it off, deciding to organize a wrestling match to make a fortune. Harry brings in the popular wrestler Strangler (played by Mike Mazurki) to face George's protege Nicholas (played by Ken Richmond), and suddenly, this epic showdown becomes a local legend. Harry's high-profile actions anger the gangsters who monopolize the profits from the local wrestling matches; in addition, George's son expresses strong dissatisfaction with Harry. Meanwhile, bar owner Phil (played by Francis L. Sullivan) also sees this as an opportunity to eliminate this rogue who has been involved with his wife Helen (played by Googie Withers). An unexpected incident leads to George's untimely death, dragging Harry into a murder situation.
