The story begins with a romantic love affair between two protagonists from completely different worlds: one, Danny (played by Ben Whishaw), is a man who once indulged in a life of pleasure but is now alone and yearning for true love; the other is Alex (played by Edward Holcroft), a mysterious and taciturn spy from the British MI6 headquarters.
