The beautiful girl Aru (played by Noriko Ogawa) lost her mother at a young age, and her father Hirazawa Heizo (played by Ikunosuke Koizumi) remarried a woman named Akuni (played by Yoshiko Hayashi). While Akuni is having an affair with the butler, she sees Aru as a thorn in her side in her quest for the family inheritance. One day, feeling troubled, Aru meets a shoemaker named Shin Saburo (played by Kazumoto Tani) while seeking shelter from the rain, and they fall in love at first sight. Soon after, Shin Saburo and Aru meet again and their love ignites. The two go to the mountains together, but suddenly Aru’s father interrupts. Shin Saburo wakes up only to realize it was all a dream. On the night of the Obon festival, Aru sneaks away to meet her lover. However, a monk (played by Kei Matsukawa) soon reveals a twist: it turns out Aru has been harmed by her stepmother and the butler, and the person meeting Shin Saburo at night is actually the ghost of Aru, who is still attached to the earthly love...
