Iron Man Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) refuses to hand over his latest technology during a congressional hearing. Meanwhile, he discovers that the mini arc reactor in his chest is rapidly causing palladium poisoning in his blood. Frustrated, Tony hands over the presidency of Stark Industries to his assistant, Pepper (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), giving her full responsibility for the ongoing Stark Expo in New York. Pepper brings in assistant Natalie (played by Scarlett Johansson) from the legal department to take care of Tony. Tony's high-profile appearance in the media raises the ire of Ivan (played by Mickey Rourke), the son of his father's former colleague. Seeking revenge, he follows in his father's footsteps and develops equipment that rivals the Iron Man suit. Ivan's technology catches the attention of Tony's rival, arms dealer Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell), who manages to break Ivan out of prison to secretly work on replacing Iron Man. Just as Tony struggles with the disappointments caused by the palladium poisoning, he discovers that Natalie has a secret mission and that his own stubbornness has led to a falling out with his friend, Colonel Rhodey (played by Don Cheadle).
