On December 31, 1968 (Showa 43), Manpou Tetsuhira (played by Takuya Kimura) stepped once again onto the memory-laden land of Tanba Shinyama, where the white, snowy ground bore only his footprints. Two years prior, Tetsuhira was a promising entrepreneur, leading the advanced steel manufacturing company Hanshin Steel. However, lacking a blast furnace, he couldn't produce pig iron on his own and was constrained by the dominant Imperial Steel. Aspiring to match the world's steelmaking standards, Tetsuhira was determined to create a blast furnace for his own company. Tetsuhira's father, Manpou Daisuke, managed Hanshin Bank, which faced the imminent threat of being swallowed up by financial reforms. In a bid to secure their family's enterprise, Daisuke did not hesitate to use his children's politically motivated marriages to forge connections. This magnificent family, appearing glamorous on the surface and holding power within the Kansai financial conglomerate, resided in a grand mansion overseeing the masses. However, within this luxurious abode lay hidden secrets: the three beds in Daisuke's room and Tetsuhira's striking resemblance to his grandfather raised Daisuke's suspicions... As the opening said, this is a story of a son who risks his life for steelmaking and a father struggling to survive in the turbulent wave of financial reform, intertwined with the love and hatred within the beautiful family led by the father.
