Jimmy (played by Lucas Neff) doesn't have a steady job and is living with his mother Virginia (played by Martha Plimpton) and father Burt (played by Garret Dillahunt) because he doesn't have a house. He unexpectedly meets the beautiful Lucy (played by Bijou Phillips), and they fall in love at first sight. However, Jimmy soon discovers that Lucy is an escaped convict, and she is captured by the police shortly after. Months later, Jimmy visits her in prison, only to find out that Lucy has given birth to their daughter. Lucy is soon to be executed, and the responsibility of raising the child inevitably falls on Jimmy. Confused and helpless, Jimmy takes his daughter home, but his family shows no affection toward the little one. For the already troubled Chance family, the unexpected arrival of a new family member adds to their headaches...
