Jan Saudek (born May 13, 1935, in Prague) is a Czech artistic photographer and painter, as well as a world-renowned photographer. Born into a humble Jewish family, Jan Saudek's artistic achievements were recognized early in his homeland—Czechoslovakia. It was only later that he frequently held photography exhibitions both domestically and internationally and won numerous international awards. In the 1970s, while living in a dilapidated, moldy basement, he created distinct photographic works that defied the documentary style of the time, using his extraordinary imagination. Having experienced war, concentration camps, Stalinism, and poverty, he manually colored and painted his photographs to reflect his dream world. His works are often set against the backdrop of weathered plaster walls featuring nude or semi-nude figures, frequently incorporating recurrent elements such as the Charles Bridge in Prague or overcast skies; however, the portrayals of voluptuous women and emaciated girls in his work carry an element of eroticism. The film attempts to depict the life and work of this Czech national treasure of a photographer.
