The War to Resist America and Aid Korea has entered its most critical decisive stage. During the negotiations in Panmunjom, the U.S. military secretly assembled a large number of troops and launched a surprise attack. The U.S. military had a clear objective: to capture Shangganling as a base to subsequently seize Wusheng Mountain, thereby increasing their bargaining chips in the negotiations. At Shangganling, it was guarded by the Eighth Company of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. Faced with a much larger enemy force, the Volunteer Army did not retreat, but chose to resist tenaciously in order to delay the U.S. military's progress and thwart the enemy's plot. Under the leadership of Company Commander Zhang Zhongfa (played by Gao Baocheng), the company fought fiercely against the U.S. forces. Despite the harsh conditions in the tunnels and facing the danger of running out of water and food, the Volunteer Army held out for 24 days, laying a solid foundation for the major counteroffensive of the Chinese-Korean allied forces.
