In the future, due to war and the depletion of resources, the industrial society based on oil collapses, and people fight desperately for gasoline, creating a nightmarish end-of-the-world scene. Max (played by Mel Gibson), who has lost friends and family, lives out of his car and continues his endless battles with the road warriors. However, as his V8 runs out of fuel, Max is forced to leave the highway and, guided by a trapper, heads to an oil drilling site in search of fuel. In the desert, people build defenses to protect the drilling site against the marauding knights led by Humungus. Max saves a dying drilling site defender from the knights but is subsequently captured by the drilling guards. At this critical juncture, Humungus encircles the drilling site with his followers, and Max devises a plan to confront Humungus...
