This film is the first documentary shot in animated form. Israeli director Ari Folman witnessed the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Beirut, Lebanon in 1982 at the age of 19 as an Israeli soldier. More than twenty years later, with fragmented memories, Folman attempts to recall the truth of the massacre through dialogues and interviews with former comrades, friends, psychologists, and military personnel and journalists who experienced the atrocity. As Folman's memory gradually comes back, the horrors of the 1982 Lebanon War emerge frame by frame. This film won the César Award for Best Foreign Film, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Feature, and was the runner-up for Best Documentary. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and Best Animated Feature, and competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
