The masked hero Zorro (played by Anthony Hopkins) suddenly descends from the sky to stop the Spanish governor Montero from slaughtering the innocent. He rescues a prisoner about to be executed, thus establishing a deep feud with Montero. Subsequently, Montero sends troops to track Zorro. In the midst of a chaotic battle, Zorro's wife is killed and his infant daughter is taken away, leading to Zorro's imprisonment. Twenty years fly by, and to ensure that his legacy continues, Zorro escapes from prison wearing a mask. Montero is still committing evil acts, planning to buy the rights to California. Zorro finds a young thief named Marieta (played by Antonio Banderas) and teaches him everything he knows, hoping Marieta can stop Montero's scheme. Marieta inherits Zorro's mask, but when he confronts Montero, he discovers that the fierce Spanish princess standing in his way (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) is actually the daughter of the old Zorro!
