 Synopsis
The Second Schleswig War broke out in 1864, also known as the Prussian-Danish War. The war marked a critical turning point in Danish history, as it saw Prussia, Austria, and several member states of the North German Confederation launch an attack against Denmark. Denmark was defeated in the war, losing 40% of its territory and 38.5% of its population. Though the war lasted only 6 months, it was the bloodiest conflict in Danish history, and in many versions of European history lessons, this war is seen as the first step towards the unification of the German Confederation by Otto von Bismarck, the Iron Chancellor. The two children of the baron's estate servants, Peter Jensen and Roulst Jensen, fell in love simultaneously with the estate manager's daughter, Inge. However, the two brothers were called up to serve in the military due to the Prussian-Danish War. Before leaving, Roulst secretly had relations with Inge and she unexpectedly became pregnant, forcing her to go to the battlefield in search of the child's father. Tragically, the child's biological father, Roulst, died in battle. The war destroyed Denmark's territory and also shattered countless originally happy families.
