In the late 18th century, during the reign of King Sukjong of Korea, the vice envoy's son Lee Mang-ryong (played by Cao Chengyou) met the beautiful girl Chung Chun-hyang (played by Lee Hyo-jung) on the day of the Dragon Boat Festival. Chun-hyang, whose mother was a former courtesan, left him a riddle: 'Wild geese fly with fish, butterflies dance with flowers, little crabs dwell with shells.' After much contemplation, Mang-ryong finally guessed the answer and went to visit Chun-hyang that evening. Despite their different social statuses, their feelings for each other deepened. However, their dreams were short-lived as Mang-ryong's father, due to his outstanding political achievements, was promoted to a higher position, and Mang-ryong had to leave Namwon for Hanyang. He promised Chun-hyang that once he passed the state examination, he would bring her to Hanyang as his legitimate wife. The Namwon envoy Byeon Hak-do (played by Lee Jeong-heon) coveted Chun-hyang's beauty and maliciously used the legal phrase 'Once a woman enters the courtesan's door, she is forever a courtesan' to accuse her of being a prostitute. Chun-hyang remained steadfast and refused to yield, but the angry envoy brutally abused her and imprisoned her on trumped-up charges. Chun-hyang's only support was her faith and Mang-ryong's promise. Fortunately, at that time, Mang-ryong had already become the top scholar and arrived in the area as a special envoy, rescuing Chun-hyang and punishing the envoy for his wrongdoing.
