The film is adapted from the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs, telling the story of William Lee (played by Daniel Craig), an American expatriate in his 40s living in a small community of Americans in Mexico City during the 1950s, who lives a solitary life. The arrival of a young student, Eugene Allerton (played by Drew Starkey), prompts Lee to start pursuing meaningful relationships with others again.
