Rich businessman Edward Cole (played by Jack Nicholson) has made a significant profit from the privatization of public hospitals in recent years. In order to cut costs, he has implemented the controversial practice of 'two beds in one room' for hospital wards, but the strong-willed Cole pays little heed to the criticism. However, he is soon diagnosed with cancer, and under public pressure, he has to share a room with another patient, the elderly Carter (played by Morgan Freeman), instead of getting a single room as he initially wanted. Carter, a knowledgeable automobile mechanic, has successfully raised his three children but sacrificed his dream of becoming a history professor in his youth. Having been married several times and now being alone, Cole gradually becomes interested in Carter, and the two elderly men forge a friendship in the hospital room. Cole accidentally discovers Carter's 'bucket list' and decides to use his resources to help fulfill the wild ideas listed on it, in search of the true meaning of life...
