Sophie, a little girl living in an orphanage (played by Ruby Barnhill), is often gloomy. One day at three in the morning, she is alone at the window watching the long night when she inadvertently sees a giant figure (played by Mark Rylance). The giant is panicked after being discovered and hurriedly grabs Sophie, flying back to his land of giants. Fortunately, this giant, known as the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), lives up to his name; unlike others of his kind who eat 'human beans', he only eats fruits and vegetables, and he also delivers the good dreams he finds into the dreams of children. This can be seen as a form of compensation for the atrocities of his kind. Perhaps due to their shared feeling of loneliness and kindness, little Sophie and the tall BFG slowly become familiar with each other and trust one another, becoming good friends without any misunderstanding or concealment...
