Thirty-nine steps

Gunshots rang out in the concert hall, causing panic among the audience. A foreign woman (played by Lucy Mannheim) asked Richard Hannay (played by Robert Donat) if she could spend the night at his home. The next day, before she was murdered, the woman told Richard he must stop the spy organization 'The 39 Steps' from secretly sending state secrets out of Britain. To prove he wasn't the killer, Hannay reluctantly went to the Scottish Highlands to search for clues. On the train, he sought help from a blonde young woman named Pamela (played by Madeleine Carroll), but she immediately reported him to the police. He found the leader of 'The 39 Steps', Professor Jordan, but was quickly framed and imprisoned. After managing to escape, he was again taken away by two men disguised as plainclothes policemen due to Pamela's report, and they handcuffed Pamela to him. The two of them then teamed up to escape and gained each other's trust. They returned to the concert hall, where Hannay saw the performance he had seen last time. He asked the 'Mr. Memory' (played by Wylie Watson), who claimed to answer any question: 'What are The 39 Steps?', and then... Hitchcock once said that 'Mr. Memory' was one of his favorite characters, based on a real person named Dator, whom he had seen perform as a child in London.
