Freder (played by Gustav Fröhlich) is the son of the ruler of Metropolis, Joh Fredersen (played by Alfred Abel). Guided by a holy girl (played by Brigitte Helm), Freder comes to the underground to witness the tragic conditions of the workers toiling there. Freder advises his father, wanting to change the workers' plight. But Joh remains unmoved and instead is worried about the map he found among the workers. To understand what the map indicates, Joh has no choice but to consult his old rival Rotwang (played by Rudolf Klein-Rogge). What does the map show? Why are the workers going there?
