Since the events in New York, Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) has been plagued by unprecedented anxiety. He has thrown himself obsessively into the development of an upgraded Iron Man suit, working tirelessly and even neglecting the feelings of his girlfriend, Pepper Potts (played by Gwyneth Paltrow). At the same time, the notorious terrorist leader Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) orchestrates a series of bomb attacks, leading to the severe injury of Tony's most loyal bodyguard in one of the recent incidents. Not long after, Tony, Pepper, and a botanist named Maya (played by Rebecca Hall), who he once met briefly, come under heavy fire at home and nearly lose their lives.
