Theodore (played by Justice Smith) is a very sad young man, whose mind is constantly plagued by confused thoughts of self-harm. There have been several occasions where Theodore has tried to turn the idea of suicide into reality, but just at that critical moment, something always happens to prevent him from stepping into another world. Violet (played by Elle Fanning) has lost her sister, and being very close to her sister, Violet is plunged into pain and depression. As a student, she eagerly anticipates the arrival of graduation season, as this would allow her to escape the suffocating small town of Indiana and the shadow cast by her sister's death. These two young people meet by chance at a clock tower. Theodore realizes that this lovely and genuine girl can help him take off his mask and open his heart, while Violet feels that every moment spent with Theodore makes time feel less unbearable.
