On Christmas Eve, McClane (played by Bruce Willis) is at an airport in Washington waiting for his wife Holly (played by Bonnie Bedelia) to return home for the holidays. However, he inadvertently discovers a major conspiracy: disavowed Colonel Stewart is leading his men to rescue Central American drug lord General Esperanza, who is about to be extradited. McClane informs Captain Robinson of the airport security, but Robinson's bureaucratic attitude and foolishness prevent any action from being taken. Colonel Stewart and his men take over a small church near the airport, set up a flight control center, and cut all communications between the airport control tower and the air, making it impossible for numerous passenger planes to land. Meanwhile, McClane's wife Holly is on one of those planes. To save his wife and the many planes in the air, McClane must once again make a difficult effort.
