Reporter Paula traveled to Atlantic City in pursuit of the true murderer of her boyfriend, Richard. This place is deeply influenced by American culture, and soon, a large number of eccentric characters with strange names like Donald, Richard, Widmark, and Doris appeared. During her search for the truth, Paula becomes entangled in political conspiracies and gang events. French New Wave master Godard incorporates all elements of American Hollywood gangster films into this highly deliberate political horror film, clearly paying homage to masters of the genre like Samuel Fuller, Nicholas Ray, and Howard Hawks. The film also involves many real political backgrounds and assassination events. Although the whole film seems absurd and somewhat contrived, the director uses pop music (including the song 'Time Flies' from 'North African Shadow'), advertising illustrations, and atmospheric treatments to showcase the image of French society significantly influenced and dominated by American pop culture. Marked by 'American Made', Godard's political critique consciousness entered its later stage. He vehemently opposed the narrative conventions of film as the main expression of real politics in the art of cinema. To this end, he conducted a highly challenging exploration of film representation.
