Steel Warrior

At the beginning of the Liberation War, Zhang Zhijian (played by Zhang Ping), a squad leader of a certain unit of the People's Liberation Army, leads his men to cover the troops' retreat. After fighting fiercely with the enemy for several days and nights, they run out of ammunition and food. Zhang Zhijian orders the soldiers to break through from a cliff. Due to his injuries, he is unable to move, and he, along with cook Old Wang (played by Du Defu) and company radio operator Liu Haiquan (played by Sun Yu), as well as soldier Qi Degui (played by Zhang Xiqi), falls into enemy hands. The enemy's political officer (played by Li Lin) tortures the three of them to find the weapons factory equipment and food buried by their troops before retreating, but to no avail. He also uses the traitor Qi Degui to persuade Old Wang and Liu to surrender, which also fails. In a fit of madness, the enemy brings in Zhang Zhijian's mother (played by Hu Peng) to perform a 'torture performance' alongside her son, but it does not work either. Eventually, Old Wang dies from his injuries, Liu sacrifices heroically, and Zhang Zhijian faces immense trials... This film is adapted from the opera 'Steel and Bone'.
