The story takes place during the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century. In a long-distance horse-drawn carriage, noble gentlemen and ladies are talking arrogantly to a taciturn farmer, when suddenly the farmer transforms into Juan, the family-style gang leader played by Rod Steiger. After robbing a bank, he encounters John, a demolition expert from the Irish Revolutionary Army played by James Coburn. John's explosive skills make robbing the Mesa Verde Bank easy, so Juan doggedly follows him but inadvertently gets involved in the Mesa Verde uprising alongside the Villa revolutionary army. Juan manages to partner with John in robbing the bank, but all he gains is the liberation of 150 political prisoners. Colonel Gante of the government forces leads the suppression of the revolution, and both Juan and the revolutionary team pay a heavy price. In adversity, John and Juan develop a true revolutionary friendship, and on their way to America, they turn back to ambush Colonel Gante. When John is shot, the old warrior recalls warm scenes from his past in Ireland… This film won the Best Director Award at the 1972 Italian David Awards.
