This film is a documentary funded by Columbia Pictures and directed by television documentary filmmaker Peter Davis. It explores why the United States waged war on Vietnam from 1959 to 1975, the tragic plight of the Vietnamese people, and the shift in attitudes of the American public towards the Vietnam War. It is the first film to screen in the U.S. that directly interviews and depicts the suffering of Vietnamese civilians, showcasing the racism of U.S. military leaders and the shameless deceit of the American government towards its own people. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974 and was subsequently shelved by Columbia due to its highly controversial content. Producers Bert Schneider and Henry Lange bought back the rights from Columbia and finally released it in the U.S. through Warner Bros. in 1975. This film won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 1974 and was nominated for the same year's Golden Globe for Best Documentary.
