At the beginning of the 1980s, the small country of El Salvador in northern Central America erupted into a civil war that lasted 12 years. Government troops and guerrillas fought fiercely year after year, leaving the people displaced and the nation in ruins. An 11-year-old boy named Chava (played by Carlos Padilla) lives with his mother and sisters, while his father has left home and is missing. Life at home is extremely difficult, with death threatening them at any moment. Chava, who should be studying in school, is instead forced to become a child soldier carrying an assault rifle. From then on, death becomes the most intimate yet terrifying companion for these innocent children. The film won three awards at the 2005 Mexican Academy Awards for Best Makeup, Best Special Effects, and Best Supporting Actress (Ofelia Medina); the Crystal Bear Award at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival; and Best Foreign Film at the 2005 San Diego Film Critics Society Awards, as well as Best Picture at the 2005 Seattle International Film Festival.
